Railings are where cutting corners shows up fastest. A shelf that sags is an annoyance. A railing that fails is a liability. So we don't guess — every project starts with the run itself: the rake of the staircase, the height the code requires, the substrate we're anchoring into.
A base shoe channel fixed into a concrete slab is a different job than standoffs set through the side of a century-old timber stringer, and both differ from a post-and-clamp system on a rooftop deck that flexes in the wind. We measure for the building that exists, not the one on the drawing — and in the Bronx and Manhattan, the one that exists is rarely square.
We’ve installed railings on high-floor terraces where wind exposure drives the whole spec, along pre-war staircases where the angle shifts between flights, and across commercial lobbies where the railing is the first thing anyone sees. The glass and hardware are specified for the span and the application before a single panel is cut.
Where Glass Railings Work
Staircases. The most common request, and the one that opens up a narrow interior fastest — glass along a stair run lets light travel between floors instead of trapping it behind a solid balustrade. Straight flights, landings, quarter-turns, and curved or spiral stairs all work; the tighter the geometry, the more the templating matters.
Balconies. On a Manhattan balcony, frameless glass keeps the skyline visible from inside the apartment instead of framing it out. That’s usually the whole point — you paid for the view, the railing shouldn’t hide it.
Terraces & rooftops. Outdoor railings face wind exposure that interior stairs never see, so the glass and anchoring are specified accordingly, and every piece of hardware is corrosion-resistant to survive weather and rooftop exposure.
